By default quick search starts automatically on typing file name.
If you want to type into the command line change that in Settings Window in section "Behavior/Quick Search".
Quick Search opens the panel:

Button for switching to Quick Search. Hot key Alt+Q.

Keeps found files only in the list. Filtered list gets held and not reset as usual after a short delay.
